What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (Tenter Street, Bishop Auckland) (Temporary Road Closure and Prohibition of Driving) Order 2025

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road in the manner described.

Road Closure (closure to vehicular traffic): A 215 metre length of Tenters Street, between its junctions with A689 and Newgate Street and incorporating a 30 metre length of road extending west to Vinovium House, Bishop Auckland.

Prohibition of Driving: No person shall cause or permit any vehicular traffic from travelling northbound onto George Street (when traffic will be using Saddler Street in a reversed (west to east) direction). It will be necessary to suspend and reverse, Schedule 1.1 relative to Article 4 of the County of Durham (Bishop Auckland Bus Station)(Traffic Regulation) Order 1984, detailing the one-way restriction on Saddler Street between George Street and A689 roundabout and suspend Schedule 4, relative to Article 3 of the County of Council of Bishop Auckland Town Centre)(Traffic Management) Order 2005 (Amendment No.1) Order 2017, to permit traffic other than buses to travel from Tenters Street to Newgate Street to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken. An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from the western side of the closure from A689 north to the roundabout, then south east on Saddler Street, south on George Street, east on Tenters Street to the eastern side of the closure, then south on Newgate Street to A689. There will be no signed diversion route during the Tenters Street closure, from the George Street junction to Newgate Street junction. The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are required from 8pm on Monday 6/7/2026 and the duration of the works are anticipated to be 8 nights. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
