Durham - Temporary Weight Limit Restrictions Due To Bridge Safety Defects
What is happening?
The County Council of Durham (A181 and Unclassified road 27.8 Shincliffe Lane, Sherburn House) (Temporary Weight Limit Restriction) Order 2026
The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to restrict all vehicular traffic with an 18 tonne and 7.5 tonne weight from proceeding on the following lengths of road.
A. Restriction to 18 tonne Vehicular Traffic: on a 40 metre length of A181 that extends north westwards from 10 metres north west of the access to the sewage works.
B. Restriction to 7.5 tonne Vehicular Traffic: on Unclassified road 27.8 Shincliffe Lane between its junctions with A181 Sherburn House and B1198. The weight restrictions are necessary for road safety purposes owing to identified defects with Sherburn House Bridge.
An alternative route will be signed to affected vehicular traffic from the southern side of the closure, from B1198 / A181 easterly to Byers Garth Roundabout, then northerly on C12a Mill Lane top Sherburn Village, then westerly on B1283 to the junction with A181 to the northern side of the closure, and vice versa.
The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed restrictions required from Friday 10/7/2026 for a period of 12-18 months, or a time when the bridge is repaired and safe to re-open to all traffic, whichever is the sooner. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
