What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 -

SECTION 14(1)(A) AND (7)

THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (A605 CHESTERTON TO A47 WANSFORD INTERCHANGE, CAMBRIDGESHIRE)

(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIANS) ORDER 202_

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited(a) intends to make an Order on the A1 Trunk Road in Cambridgeshire to enable vehicle restraint system repair, upgrade and repair to the drainage system, resurfacing and drainage works to be carried out in safety.

There would be two sets of works to be carried out in the following phases –

•     Phase 1: Vehicle restraint system repair and upgrade and repair to the drainage system on the Wansford Railway Underbridge would last for approximately 2 weeks and are expected to start on, or after Monday 20 July 2026 , and

•     Phase 2: Resurfacing and drainage works would last for approximately 12 weeks and are expected to start on, or after Monday 3 August 2026.

The effect of the Order during Phase 1 would be to impose, for 24 hours daily -

1.   a speed restriction of 50 miles per hour on the A1 –

•     southbound carriageway from 350 metres south of Windgate Way, Thornhaugh to 150 metres south of the entry slip road at the A47 Wansford Interchange,

•     northbound carriageway from 350 metres west of its southern junction with Old North Road, Water Newton, to 750 metres west of its junction with Elton Road, and

•     southbound entry slip road at the A47 Wansford Interchange.

2.   a speed restriction of 40 miles per hour on the A1 –

•     southbound carriageway from 150 metres south of the entry slip road at the A47 Wansford Interchange, to 400 metres west of its southern junction with Old Great North Rd at Stibbington,

•     northbound carriageway from 750 metres west of its junction with Elton Road, Water Newton for a distance of 2500 metres, and

•     southbound entry slip road at its northern junction with Old Great North Road at Stibbington.

3.   closure of the lay-by adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway situated approximately 200 metres west of the centre line of its junction with Elton Road.

The effect of the Order during Phase 2 would be to impose, for 24 hours daily -

1.   a speed restriction of 50 miles per hour on the A1 northbound carriageway from 700 metres south of the entry slip road at Stibbington, for a distance of 700 metres,

2.   a speed restriction of 40 miles per hour on the A1 northbound carriageway from the entry slip road at Stibbington, for a distance of 2350 metres,

3.   closure of the footway adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway situated between the entry slip road leading from London Road and its junction with Peterborough Road at Wansford, a distance of 450 metres, and

4.   closure of the lay-bys adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway from the entry slip road at its junction with the A1M J17 to the exit slip road at Stibbington.

The temporary mandatory speed limits which would not apply to emergency service or special force vehicles, and closures which would not apply to emergency service, traffic officer works or winter maintenance vehicles would be clearly indicated by traffic signs.

The Order would come into force on 13 July 2026 and may continue in force until the works detailed above have been completed, or for a maximum period of 18 months.
