THE M48 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 1) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the M48 Motorway in South Gloucestershire to enable bridge deck repairs and associated maintenance to be carried out in safety.

The effect of the Order would be to:

(a) impose a mandatory 50 MPH on the M48 westbound from 600 metres east to 60 metres west of the westbound exit slip road at Junction 1;

(b) impose a mandatory 30 MPH on the M48:

    (i) westbound from 60 metres west the westbound exit slip road at Junction 1 to 45 metres west of the circulatory carriageway at Junction 1;

    (ii) eastbound from 45 metres west of the circulatory carriageway at Junction 1 to 213 metres east of the eastbound exit slip road at M48 Junction 1;

(c) authorise the overnight (20.00 to 06.00) closure of:

    (i) the M48 westbound from junction 1 to 45 metres west of the circulatory carriageway at Junction 1;

    (ii) the M48 eastbound from 45 metres west of the circulatory carriageway at Junction 1 to Junction 1;

    (iii) the westbound entry slip road at Junction 1.

There would also be lane closures through the works.

During the closures traffic would be diverted via the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge.

The speed limit (which would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles), and closures would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works.

The Order would come into force on 6 July 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 months.
