What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1)(a) and (7) THE M48 MOTORWAY (SEVERN BRIDGE CROSSING) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION AND RESTRICTION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Secretary of State for Transport intends to make an Order on the M48 Motorway in South Gloucestershire, the County of Gloucestershire and the County of Monmouthshire to enable bridge deck repairs and associated maintenance to be carried out in safety.

The effect of the Order would be to:

(a) impose a temporary mandatory 30 mph speed limit on the M48 eastbound and westbound between 45 metres west of the circulatory carriageway at Junction 1 and 47 metres west of the mechanical joint at the western end of the M48 Severn Bridge Crossing;

(b) authorise the operation of a contraflow on the M48 eastbound from 320 metres west of the eastbound exit slip at Junction 1 to 47 metres west of the mechanical joint at the western end of the M48 Severn Bridge Crossing;

(c) authorise the overnight (20.00 to 06.00) closure of the length of the M48 given at (a).

During the closures traffic would be diverted via the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge. The latest information on the M48 Severn Bridge Crossing can be found on the National Highways website https://nationalhighways.co.uk/travelupdates/ the-severn-bridges/

The speed limit (which would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles), contraflow and closures would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works The Order would come into force on 6 July 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 months.
