ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14

THE M61 MOTORWAY 
(JUNCTIONS 4-6 NORTHBOUND CARRIAGEWAY AND SLIP ROADS)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 09346363) intends to make an Order on the M61 Motorway, in the Borough of Bolton, in the County of Greater Manchester, to enable resurfacing, renewal of road markings and studs, replacement of bridge joints and traffic detector loops, vegetation clearance works, and other general maintenance; to be carried out in safety.

The Order will on the following sections of the M61 Motorway:
i. impose a 50 mph speed limit on the northbound carriageway, from a point 300 metres north of the Cleggs Lane Bridge, to a point 1,600 metres south of the Wingates Lane Bridge;

ii. impose a 50 mph speed limit on the northbound entry slip road at J4;

iii. impose a 50 mph speed limit on the northbound entry slip road at J5;

iv. allow the hard shoulder adjacent to the northbound carriageway to be used as a running lane, from a point 500 metres north of the Anchor Lane Bridge, to a point 1,700 metres south of the Wingates Lane Bridge. A 50 mph speed limit will be in force on the hard shoulder when used as a running lane, as indicated by traffic signs.

Restrictions i.-iv. are expected to take place during an overnight period between 20:00 and 06:00, starting Monday 20 July 2026 and ending on Saturday 31 October 2026.

However, works may start and continue between the same times on subsequent nights or continue until completed.

The restrictions will not apply to emergency services or special-forces vehicles and will apply to works, traffic officer or winter maintenance vehicles. 

The restrictions will only apply during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs.
