What is happening?

WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS COUNCIL (C5065 BRIGSTEER BRIDGE, BRIGSTEER ROAD AND C5048 UNDERBARROW BRIDGE, UNDERBARROW ROAD, KENDAL (TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that because of the likelihood of danger to the public, as a result of the overloading of the weak bridges, Westmorland and Furness Council has made an Order the effect of which is to prohibit:-

Any vehicle exceeding 6’6” in width from proceeding along the following sections of road:

C5048 Underbarrow Bridge, Underbarrow Road from a point approx. 380 metres west of its junction with Marble Crescent extending in a predominantly north westerly direction for approx. 590 metres.

Alternative route for vehicles exceeding 6’6” in width: via the unrestricted sections of the C5048, C5059, B5284, A5284, U843, and U782.

C5062 Brigsteer Bridge, Brigsteer Road from a point approx. 330 metres west of its junction with Stainbank Road extending in a predominantly south westerly direction for approx. 230 metres.

Alternative route for vehicles exceeding 6’6” in width: via the unrestricted sections of the C5062, C5059, B5284, A5284, U843, U782, and U664.

Any vehicle from proceeding at speeds in excess of 20 miles per hour along the following sections of road:

C5048 Underbarrow Bridge, Underbarrow Road from a point approx. 350 metres west of its junction with Marble Crescent extending in a predominantly north westerly direction for approx. 620 metres.

C5062 Brigsteer Bridge, Brigsteer Road from a point approx. 290 metres west of its junction with Stainbank Road extending in a predominantly south westerly direction for approx. 270 metres.

This follows two emergency notices dated 11 May 2026 and 1 June 2026.

No speed limit imposed by this Order will apply to vehicles falling within regulation 3(4) of the Road Traffic Exemptions (Special Forces) (Variation and Amendment) Regulations 2011 when used in accordance with regulation 3(5) of those Regulations.

The Order will come into operation on 22 June 2026 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
