What is happening?

THE CITY OF SUNDERLAND (HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME 2026-27 (FOOTPATHS)) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

Sunderland City Council gives notice that it intends to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to temporarily prohibit all pedestrian traffic from those sections of footpaths as set out in the Schedule. The Order which is required because works are proposed to be executed on or near the highways, namely highway maintenance works, will come into force on 6th July 2026. The maximum duration of the closures under this Order will be 6 months and the works are expected to take the full 6 months. The prohibition shall apply at such time and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. A safe route for pedestrians will be maintained at all times. An exemption for the emergency services will be provided wherever possible. There will be an exception in the Order for personnel involved with the Works. SCHEDULE Prohibition of all Pedestrian Traffic from Footpaths: Clarendon Square from a point 3 metres south of the extended southern property boundary of 25 Clarendon Square, for a distance of 26 metres in a north-westerly direction; Hollycarrside all footpaths linking Toll Bar Road to Edgmond Court, Cherrytree Square and Rosebank Close; Hollycarrside all footpaths linking Cherrytree Square to Rosebank Close; Hollycarside Road the footpath linking Hollycarrside Road to Toll Bar Road; Lanercost the footpath between 39 and 40 Lanercost; Lanercost the footpath between 55 and 56 Lanercost; Lanercost the footpath between 69 and 70 Lanercost; Lloyd Avenue the footpath linking Lloyd Avenue to the rear of 21 School Road; and Warkworth Close – the entire cul-de-sac linking numbers 76 to 99 Warkworth Close.
