Workington - Temporary Road Closures & Traffic Management for Resurfacing Works
What is happening?
CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (U2650 CENTRAL WAY AND CENTRAL SQUARE, WORKINGTON) (TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be carried out (“the Works”), Cumberland Council intends to make an Order the effect of which is to prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along the following sections of road:
1. U2650 Central Way, Workington, from its junction with Central Square, extending in a north easterly direction for approx. 110m.
Alternative Route: via Central Square, Oxford Street, Station Road, A597, Church Street, William Street and Griffin Street (Cliffocks Car Park).
Duration: From 6 July 2026 for approx. 6 days between 0700 and 1900 hours, each day (Ref: TTROC/18958)
2. U2650, Central Way, Workington, from a point approx. 20m north of its junction with Central Square, extending in an overall southerly direction for approx. 290m; and
3. Central Square, Workington, from its junction with the Central Way, extending in an easterly direction for approx. 30m.
Alternative Route for vehicles not exceeding 3.1m in height: via the unrestricted section of Central Square, Oxford Street, Station Road, A597, Church Street, William Street, Griffin Street (Cliffocks Car Park) and Central Way.
There is no suitable alternative route for vehicles exceeding 3.1m in height.
Duration: From 13 July 2026 Approx. duration 6 weeks (Ref: TTROC/18904)
N.B. To facilitate the alternative route detailed above and allow two-way traffic flow under traffic management (traffic lights), the existing one-way restriction on that section the U2650, Central Way, Workington, from its junction with the access road to/exist from the Service Yard to its junction with the entrance to Brow Top Pay and Display Car Park, will be temporarily suspended for the duration of the Works.
A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times

The Order will come into operation on 6 July 2026 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months. However, please note that it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required as detailed above, and only as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
