THE A19 TRUNK ROAD (CASTLE EDEN TO SHERATON STREET) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A19 Trunk Road and the A179 Trunk Road, in County Durham, to enable street lighting works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 20:00 on Monday 6 July 2026 for 5 months, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to:
(i) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A19 northbound carriageway from North Lane at Elwick Village to 370 metres south of the A181 Wellfield overbridge, a distance of 6660 metres;
(ii) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A19 southbound carriageway from Passfield Way at Peterlee to 530 metres south of the A179 Sheraton overbridge, a distance of 7184 metres;
(iii) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A19 northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Sheraton Interchange;
(iv) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A19 southbound entry slip road at Wellfield Interchange;
(v) close the laybys adjacent to the A19 northbound carriageway 1090 and 3770 metres north of A179 Sheraton Interchange overbridge; and
(vi) close the laybys adjacent to the A19 southbound carriageway 4340 and 4921 metres south of the exit slip road at Wellfield Interchange.
It will be necessary, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:
(i) close the A19 northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Sheraton Interchange;
(ii) close the gaps in the central reservation on the A179 carriageway at 720, 860, 850, 2190, 2350, 3600 and 4540 metres north of Sheraton Interchange overbridge;
(iii) ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A19 carriageway at Hurworth Burn Road, Sheraton Bank, Front Street Hutton Henry, Castle Eden Dene, Bellows Burn Lane and the unnamed road leading to Sheraton Farm.
During the closures, suitable signed alternative routes will be available.
Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works, to anyone engaged in the said works or maintenance and traffic officer purposes). Access will be maintained at all times to premises and properties which are accessible from, and only from, the A66. The Order comes into force on 5 July 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
