What is happening?

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (A689 NEWBY WEST AND CUMMERSDALE ROUNDABOUTS AND DURDAR ROUNDABOUT TO M6 JCT 43, B5299 CUMMERSDALE ROUNDABOUT, C1014 DURDAR ROUNDABOUT, C1037 REDCAT ROUNDABOUT AND C1041 BRISCO ROUNDABOUT) (DE-RESTRICTION) ORDER 2026

1. Cumberland Council hereby give notice that on 2 June 2026 it made the above Order under Section 82(2)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The Order will come into operation on 12 June 2026 and its effect will be to de-restrict the lengths of road specified in the Schedule below which are presently “restricted road” status due to the presence of street lighting, so subject to a deemed speed limit of 30 mph, so that they will become subject to the National Speed Limit.

3. Full details of the Order, together with plans showing the lengths of road concerned, and a statement of the Council’s reasons for making the Order, may be:-

(iii) on deposit at the offices of the undersigned; and

may otherwise be obtained by emailing TrafficTeam@cumberland.gov.uk.

If you wish to question the validity of the Order or of any provision contained in it on the grounds that it is not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 or on the grounds that any requirement of that Act or any instrument made there under has not been complied with in relation to the Order, you may within six weeks of 12th May 2026 apply to the High Court for this purpose.

A689 Newby West and Cummersdale Roundabout From a point 170m west of the centre of Newby West roundabout to a point 170m east of the centre of Cummersdale roundabout, along the A689, including the full circle of the roundabouts, approx. 1.4km in length.
A595 North, Newby West Roundabout From the leading edge of the splitter island where the A595 meets the A689 for distance of 40m in a northerly direction.
A595 South, Newby West Roundabout From the leading edge of the splitter island where the A595 meets the A689 for distance of 170m in a southerly direction.
B5299 North, Cummersdale Roundabout From the leading edge of the splitter island where the B5299 meets the A689 for distance of 70m in a northerly direction.
A689 Durdar Roundabout to M6 Jct 43 From a point 200m north-west of the centre of Durdar roundabout to the leading edge of the splitter island on the A689 exit off J43. Including the full circle of Durdar, Redcat and Brisco Roundabouts, approx. 4.5km in length.
C1014 West, Durdar Roundabout From the leading edge of the splitter island where the C1014 meets the A689 for distance of 90m in a south-westerly direction.
C1014 East, Durdar Roundabout From the leading edge of the splitter island where the C1014 meets the A689 for distance of 40m in a north-easterly direction.
C1037 North, Redcat Roundabout From the leading edge of the splitter island where the C1037 meets the A689 for distance of 40m in a northerly direction.
