What is happening?

CITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE 

(AJ BELL GREAT NORTH 10K 2026)
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne intend, not less than seven days from the date of this Notice, to make an Order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to prohibit any vehicular traffic to proceed on;

2. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit all vehicles to proceed on the following lengths of road -

(a) Great North 10k NUF Family Run (4 July 2026)
i. Strawberry Place - from its junction with Barrack Road in an easterly direction for a distance of 200 metres,

ii. Strawberry Lane - from its junction with Strawberry Place in a southerly direction for a distance of 35 metres,

iii. West Back St James' Street - from its junction with Strawberry Place in a northerly direction for a distance of 111 metres,

iv. St James Terrace - from its junction with Leazes Terrace in an easterly direction to its junction with St James' Street, and

v. Leazes Terrace - from its junction with St James Terrace in a northerly direction for a distance of 194 metres.

(b) Great North 10k (5 July 2026)
i. Great North Road - from its junction with Blue House Roundabout in a southerly direction to the on-slip onto the A167 Central Motorway,

ii. A167 Central Motorway - from its junction with the on-slip from Great North Road to its junction with Bottle Bank (Tyne Bridge),

iii. Tyne Bridge - from its junction with Bottle Bank to its junction with the off-slip onto Market Street East, for its entire length,

iv. Market Street - from its junction with Market Street East in a westerly direction to its junction with Nun Street, 

v. Grainger Street - from its junction with Market Street in a northerly direction to its junction with Blackett Street,

vi. Blackett Street - for its entire length,

vii. Market Street East - for its entire length,

viii. John Dobson Street - from its junction with Market Street East to its
junction with St Mary's Place,

ix. St Mary's Place - from its junction with John Dobson Street to Sandyford Road,

x. Sandyford Road - from its junction with St Mary's Place in a northeasterly direction for a distance of 188 metres,

xi. College Street - from its junction with St Mary's Place, for its entire length,

xii. Durant Road - from its junction with John Dobson Street to its junction with New Bridge Street Roundabout,

xiii. A167 Central Motorway on-slip - from its junction with New Bridge Street Roundabout to its junction with the off-slip onto Great North Road,

xiv. Great North Road - to its junction with Barras Bridge,

xv. Barras Bridge - to its junction with Haymarket Lane,

xvi. Haymarket Lane - from its junction with Percy Street to Kings Road,

xvii. Kings Road - from its junction with Haymarket Lane in a north-easterly direction to its junction with Claremont Road,

xviii. Claremont Road - from its junction with Kings Road to its junction with Barras Bridge, and

xix. Great North Road - from its junction with Barras Bridge in a northerly direction to its junction with Blue House Roundabout.

3. The alternative route for traffic will be signed on site as required.

4. The Order is required in connection with AJ Bell Great North 10k 2026 ("the Event") and to reduce the disruption to traffic likely to be caused by the Event. The Order is required to allow the Event to be carried out safely on or near the highway and to ensure the health and safety of the public.

5. Appropriate traffic management will be in place during the closures.

6. Exemptions will be provided for vehicles engaged in the said event and police, fire brigade and ambulance vehicles on emergency call.

7. The Order will come into operation on 4 July 2026 and will continue, as and when the relevant traffic signs are displayed, up to 5 July 2026 or until the proposed event has ended, whichever is the earlier.
