What is happening?
CITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE (BLAYDON RACES 2026) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026
1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne intend, not less than seven days from the date of this Notice, to make an Order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and has received consent from the Secretary of State for Transport to make such an Order.
2.The effect of the Order will be to prohibit all vehicles from proceeding on the following lengths of road -
a) B1600 Lower City Road - from A186 City Road to Milk Market,
b) B1600 Quayside - for its entire length,
c) Broad Chare - from Quayside north westwards for 60 metres,
d) King Street - from Quayside to Queen Street,
e) B1600 Sandhill - for its entire length,
f) Swing Bridge - for its entire length,
g) B1600 Close - from Sandhill to Skinnerburn Road,
h) Forth Banks - from Skinnerburn Road westwards for 50 metres,
i) Skinnerburn Road - from B1600 Sandhill to Monarch Road,
j) Shot Factory Lane - from Pottery Lane to Skinnerburn Road,
k) Monarch Road - from Skinnerburn Road to William Armstrong Road,
l) Water Street - from Monarch Road northwards for 80 metres,
m) William Armstrong Road - from Monarch Road to A695 Scotswood Road,
n) A695 Scotswood Road westbound lanes - from Plummer Street to Scotwood Bridge,
o) Scotswood Bridge - from A695 Scotswood Road to its boundary with Gateshead, and
p) A695 Scotswood Road eastbound lane - from a point 200 metres southeast of Denton Road south eastwards for 200 metres.
3. The alternative route for vehicles will be via the existing highway network.
4. Temporary no waiting/loading restrictions will be introduced on Skinnerburn Road for its entire length on 9th June 2026, 8:00 - 21:30 on both sides of the road.
5. The Order is required to facilitate the “Blaydon Races 2026” (“the Event”), to enable members of the public to watch the Event and to reduce the disruption to traffic likely to be caused by the Event.
6. Exemptions will be provided for police, fire brigade and ambulance vehicles on emergency call and vehicles associated with the event. The Order is required to allow the Event to be carried out safely on or near the highway and to ensure the health and safety of the public.
7. The Order will come into operation at 08:00 on 9th June 2026 and will continue to be in force until 21:30 on 9th June 2026, as and when relevant traffic signs are displayed.
