What is happening?
THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF BURY (ST THOMAS CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL, SCHOOL STREET, BURY) (SCHOOL STREETS, BURY) (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) EXPERIMENTAL ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Bury Metropolitan Borough Council has made the above named Order on 22nd May 2026 under sections 1, 2, 9 & 10 and Part III of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and of all other enabling powers.
This Order shall come into effect on 5th June 2026 and the effect of the Order will be to restrict vehicles (except for cyclists) from the roads surrounding St Thomas Church of England Primary School between the hours of 8:30 - 9:00 and 15:00 -15:30 Monday to Friday when temporary road signage is in place, unless the driver is in possession of an authorised School Street Permit. The order is made on an experimental basis for a period up to 18 months to promote safer and calmer streets at school times by making these streets pedestrian and cycle zones.
A copy of the Order (including the exemptions contained within them) with plans showing the roads and areas affected and a statement of the Council’s reasons for making the Order. Copies of these may be requested by email at engcon@bury.gov.uk quoting ref: TM2/26/566. The documents will also be on deposit at the reception desk at The Town Hall Bury, BL9 0SW during office hours.
The Council will be considering in due course whether the provisions of the experimental Order should be continued in force indefinitely. Any person wishing to object to such indefinite continuation of the provisions may within 6 months of 28th May 2026 (or if this Order is varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of the Act, 6 months from the date on which the variation or modification or the latest variation or modification came into force) object in writing stating the grounds on which that objection is being made. Objections should be sent to the Head of Engineering, Bradley Fold Depot, Bradley Fold Road, Bury BL2 6RS or preferably by email to TROobjections@bury.gov.uk quoting ref TM2/26/566.
Please note that all representations received may be considered in public by the Council and that the substance of any representation together with the name and address of the person making it could become available for public inspection.
Any person who wishes to question the validity of the experimental Order or any of its provisions on the grounds that it or they are not within the powers conferred by the Act, or that any requirements of the Act or of any instrument made under it have not been complied with may, within six weeks from the date on which the Order was made, apply to the High Court for that purpose.
