Durham - Introduction of 20mph Speed Limit on Various Streets
What is happening?
THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF DURHAM (VARIOUS STREETS, SHINCLIFFE) (20 MPH SPEED LIMIT) ORDER 2026
The Council on 22/5/2026 made an Order under Sections 81, 82, 84 & 87 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 “(the Act)”, as amended. The effect of the order which comes into operation on 4/6/2026 will bring into force a 20mph speed limit on the following roads:-
- Unc 27.20 Low Road, from approximately 22.5 metres from the junction with the A177 Stockton Road in a southerly direction for 270 metres (to a point where the road becomes Unc 27.20 High Street).
- Unc 27.20 High Street, from approximately 51.3 metres from its junction with the A177 Willow Tree Avenue in a westerly direction of 370 metres (to a point where the road becomes Unc 27.20 Low Road).
- Unc St Mary’s Close, for its entire length.
- Unc The Mews, for its entire length
- Unc Hall Farm, for its entire length
- Unc Low Green, for its entire length.
A copy of the Order and supporting documents can be seen via the Council website, and at Durham Clayport Library during normal opening hours. Any person wishing to question the validity of the Order or of any provision contained in it on the grounds that it is not within the powers conferred by “the Act”, as amended, or on the grounds that any requirement of that Act or of any regulation made under it has not been complied with in relation to the Order may, within 6 weeks from 22/5/2026.
