THE A40 TRUNK ROAD (HIGHNAM TO OVER)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the A40 trunk road in the County of Gloucestershire to allow bridge refurbishment and associated maintenance works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to take place commencing on or after 8 June 2026 and be completed by 9 March 2027.
The effect of the Order would be to:
(a) impose a mandatory 30 miles per hour speed limit on the A40 eastbound and westbound between Highnam Roundabout and 50 metres east of Over Roundabout;
(b) authorise the overnight closure (20.00 to 06.00) of the A40 eastbound and westbound between Highnam Roundabout and Over Roundabout and the eastbound entry slip road from the B4215.
(c) authorise the closure of the slip road from the A417 to the A40 westbound at Over;
(d) authorise the operation of a contraflow on the A40 eastbound or westbound between the junction with the B4215 and Over Roundabout;
(e) prohibit vehicles over 3 metres wide from the length of the A40 given at (b) above;
(f) authorise the closure of the footway located on the central reservation of the A40 50 metres west of Over Roundabout;
(g) authorise the closure of the gap in the central reservation located adjacent to the entrance to Over Farm shop;
(h) prohibit right turns from the A40 into Horseshoe Drive;
(i) authorise the closure of the bus stops on the length of the A40 given at (d) above.
During the closures, traffic would be diverted via junctions of the A40 and local roads.
The closures (which would not apply to emergency service, traffic officer or works vehicles) speed limits, contraflows, and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works.
The Order would come into force on 6 June 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 Months.
