What is happening?

(Temporary Road Closure and Bus Lane Suspension) Order 2026

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road as described.

Road Closure (closed to vehicular traffic): An 87 metre length of Deans Walk, Gilesgate to the front of Nos 38-48 Deans Walk.

Bus Lane Suspension: It will also be necessary to suspend the bus lane restriction for A690 south westbound carriageway – nearside lane, as detailed in The County Council of Durham (Various Locations, County Durham) (Bus, Cycle, Motorcycle and Taxi Lanes 7am-7pm) Order 2014 to enable water pipe installation works to be undertaken.

Throughout the period of the closure, a diversion for Deans Walk will be available to vehicular traffic on Pilgrims Way and Prebends Field.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are to commence from 8am on Monday 8/6/2026 and the duration of the works are anticipated to be 13 weeks. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
