Durham - Temporary Road Closures Due To Carriageway Resurfacing Works

The County Council of Durham (A181 Wingate-Wellfield and B1281 Castle Eden) (Temporary Road Closure) Order 2026

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road.

1. A 1310 metre length of A181 extending easterly from the B1280 Salters Lane and A181 on-slip road to the A19 overbridge;
2. An 85 metre length of the A181 eastbound carriageway between the A181 to B1280 Salters Lane eastbound off-slip road to the B1280 to A181 northern on-slip junction;
3. A 270 metre length of B1282 from its junction with the A19 overbridge southbound on slip and extending west to the junction with Burdon Walk, Castle Eden;
4. An 80 metre length of A181 northern on-slip lane from B1280 Salters Lane to A181 eastbound carriageway;
5. A 240 metre length of westbound A181 off-slip to B1280 Salter Lane;
6. A 100 metre length of C135 Wellfield Road that extends westerly from A181, including a 40 metre length of Unclassified Wellfield Road that extends easterly from this road toward Cottage Farm to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken.

Alternative routes will be signposted to vehicular traffic as follows:

1. Easington Diversion - from A181 via the B1280 eastbound off-slip, north on B1280 Salters Lane, then easterly and northerly on B1283 to Easington;
2. Sheraton (west) Diversion - Northern side of the closure, from A181/B1280 at Wingate, south on B1280 to A179 / A19 Sheraton Interchange junction;
3. B1281 (South) Castle Eden Diversion - from A19 southbound from Peterlee / Castle Eden east onto B1320 Burnhope Way Peterlee to A1018 Horden then south easterly on A1018 and west on B1281 toward Castle Eden, and vice versa;
4. B1281 (East) Diversion - from A19 northbound from Sheraton to Wellfield, east on B1230 Burnhope Way then as diversion in 3;
5. B1281 (North) Diversion - from A19 southbound from Wellfield to Sheraton, east on A179 to Hartlepool, turning north on A1086 Coast Road to Blackhall Colliery and the junction with B1281;
6. Peterlee Diversion - from B1281 Castle Eden, east to A1086, then north west to the junction with B1320;
7. Sheraton (east) Diversion - from B1281 Castle Eden east to A1086, then south westerly on A1086 to Hartlepool then west on A179 to Sheraton;
8. A181 (West/Durham) Diversion - from A179/B1280 Sheraton Interchange, westerly on B1280 to Station Town and Wingate and C135 Durham Road to A181;
9. A181 (West/Durham) Diversion - from A19 northbound to exit to A179 Easington, then south-westerly on B1283 south on B1280 Salters Lane to A181 Wingate.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The works are required from 8pm on Friday 5/6/2026 and for the duration of the works anticipated to be 10 nights, between 8pm–6am per night. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and those will be signed on site accordingly.
