ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14

THE A1(M) MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 60 TO JUNCTION 63) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited has made an Order on the A1(M) Motorway, in County Durham, to enable bridge refurbishment, traffic loop replacements, road marking and resurfacing works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start at 8pm on Monday 18 May 2026 for 8 months or until completed.

The effect of the Order will be from Monday to Friday between 8pm and 6am, Saturday between 8pm and 9am and Sunday between 8pm and 10am and, if necessary, will continue between the same times over subsequent nights until completed, to close the:

(i) A1(M) northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 61 (Bowburn) to the entry slip road at Junction 63 (Blind Lane), a distance of 17400 metres;

(ii) A1(M) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 63 to the entry slip road at Junction 61, a distance of 17400 metres;

(iii) A688/A1(M) Bowburn Interchange Roundabout;

(iv) A690/A1(M) Carrville Interchange Roundabout;

(v) A1(M) northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 61, Junction 62 (Carrville) and Junction 63; and

(vi) A1(M) southbound entry slip road at Washington Services.

It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to impose a temporary 50mph, 40mph and 30mph speed restriction on the A1(M):

(vii) northbound carriageway from 800 metres south of the exit slip road at Junction 61 to the entry slip road at Junction 63, a distance of 18200 metres;

(viii) southbound carriageway from 600 metres north of the exit slip road at Junction 63 to the entry slip road at Junction 61, a distance of 18000 metres; and

(ix) northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads as described in (v).

The works will also require 24 hours a day lane closures, during which times the hardshoulder will be used for traffic adjacent to the A1(M) northbound and southbound carriageways from a point 2400 metres south of the centre point of Lumley Thicks Overbridge to a point 2400 metres north of the centre point of Lumley Thicks Overbridge, a distance of 4800 metres.

During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available. However, at times when the carriageway is open, traffic will be diverted onto the opposite carriageway using a contraflow system between 2400 metres south and 2400 metres north of Lumley Thicks Overbridge.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hour a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and the prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance). The Order comes into force on 17 May 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.

The project manager for this scheme is Ted Chamberlain. For enquiries please contact the National Highways Customer Contact Centre on 03001235000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk
