Carlisle - Multiple Temporary Road Closures Due To Footway Improvement Works
What is happening?
CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (SHADY GROVE ROAD, CRANBOURNE ROAD AND CLIFT STREET, CARLISLE) (TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to enable footway improvement works to be carried out (“the Works”), Cumberland Council has made an Order the effect of which is to prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along the following sections of road:
1. Shady Grove Road, Carlisle from its junction with the B5307 Newtown Road, extending in a south westerly direction for approx. 5m.
Alternative Route for South Bound Vehicles: via Newtown Road, Crown Road, Green Lane and Brookside.
NB To facilitate the alternative route and allow two-way traffic flow during the road restriction detailed in 1 above, the one-way traffic restriction on that section of Shady Grove Road from its junction with Newtown Road to its junction with Brookside, will be temporarily suspended for the duration of the works.
Duration: From 12 May 2026 for approx. 2 days between 0900 and 1600 hours, each day (Ref: TTROC/18513)
2. Cranbourne Road, Carlisle from its junction with the B5307 Newtown Road, extending in a south easterly direction for approx. 100m.
Alternative Route: via the unrestricted section of Cranbourne Road, Brookside, Bower Street, A595 Wigton Road and B5307 Port Road and Newtown Road.
Duration: From 20 May 2026 for approx. 3 days between 0900 and 1600 hours, each day (Ref: TTROC/18518)
3. Clift Street, Carlisle from its junction with the B5307 Newtown Road, extending in a north westerly direction for approx. 60m.
Alternative Route: via Ruthella Street, Lawson Street and the B5307 Newtown Road.
Duration: From 26 May 2026 for approx. 3 days between 0900 and 1600 hours, each day (Ref: TTROC/18519)
A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times

The Order will come into operation on 12 May 2026 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months. However, please note that it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required as detailed above, and only as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
