Barrow-in-Furness - Introduction of 20mph Speed Limits & Amendment to Existing Speed Limits
What is happening?
WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS COUNCIL (VARIOUS ROADS, BARROW IN FURNESS AND SURROUNDING AREA) (CONSOLIDATION AND PROVISION OF SPEED LIMITS) (ORDER 2024) VARIATION ORDER NO. 1 2026
1. Westmorland and Furness Council hereby give notice that on 5 May 2026 it made the above Order under Sections 1(1) and 2(1) to (4), 32, 35, 35A, 47, 49 and 64 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
2. The Order will come into operation on 12 May 2026 and its effect will be to:
i) Introduce 20 miles per hour speed limits on various roads in the following areas:-
a. Hawcoat and Newbarns ward:
i. Dane Ghyll Primary School;
ii. Newbarns Primary School; and
iii. St Pauls Junior School and Victoria Infants & Junior Schools;
b. Old Barrow and Hindpool ward:
i. Ramsden Infants School;
c. Risedale and Roosecote ward:
i. Cambridge Primary School; and
d. Walney Island ward;
i. Cows Tarn Lane; and
ii. Walney Secondary School.
ii) Remove the 30 miles per hour speed limit on Cows Tarn Lane, Barrow in Furness.

3. Full details of the Order, together with plans showing the lengths of road concerned, and a statement of the Council’s reasons for making the Order, may be:-
(i) viewed on the Council’s website using the following link: -
(ii) on deposit at Barrow Library, Ramsden Square, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 1LL; and Walney Library, Central Drive, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 3HY
(iii) at the offices of the undersigned; and
(iv) may otherwise be obtained by emailing 20mph@westmorlandfurness.gov.uk
4. If you wish to question the validity of the Order or of any provision contained in it on the grounds that it is not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 or on the grounds that any requirement of that Act or any instrument made there under has not been complied with in relation to the Order, you may within six weeks of 5 May 2026 apply to the High Court for this purpose.
