CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (U4059 HARDKNOTT PASS) (FRED WHITTON CYCLE SPORTIVE) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF MOTOR VEHICLES) ORDER 2026
AND
WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS COUNCIL (U5032 WRYNOSE PASS, U5527 NEAR BLEA TARN, C5001 THE STRUGGLE, AMBLESIDE AND A591 GRASMERE) (FRED WHITTON CYCLE SPORTIVE) (TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to facilitate the holding of the Fred Whitton Cycle Sportive (“the Event”) which takes place along Hardknott Pass, Wrynose Pass and the U5527 near Blea Tarn, Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council have made Orders for their respective Council areas under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (the 1984 Act), the effect of which is to:
Prohibit any motor vehicle from proceeding along the following lengths of road:
U4059 Hardknott Pass, from a point approx. 5.2km east of its junction with the C4026, extending in a north easterly direction approx. 4.5km (Ref: TTROC/17784); and
U5032 Wrynose Pass, from its junction with the U4059 to its junction with the U5527, a distance of approx. 5.2km (Ref: TTROW/18003); and
U5527 near Blea Tarn, from its junction with the U5032, extending in an overall north westerly direction, a distance of approx. 2.4km (Ref: TTROW/18003).
A suitable alternative route for motor vehicles will be signed and available via the unrestricted section of the U4059, C4026, C4028 (through Ulpha), C5007 (Broughton Mills), A595, A593 (Skelwith Bridge), B5343 and the unrestricted section of the U5527.
Duration for (i) and (iii) inclusive above: Sunday 10 May 2026 between 1030 and 1830 hours.
C5001 The Struggle, Ambleside from its junction with Lower Edinburgh Road extending in a north easterly direction to its junction with the A592 (Ref: TTROW/18003).
Duration for (ii) above: Sunday 10 May 2026, only between 0600 and 0830 hours.
Suitable Alternative Routes:
North East Bound Motor Vehicles: via the unrestricted section of the C5001, Kirkstone Road, Smithy Brow, A591 (Plumgarths Roundabout), A5284 (Kendal), A6 (Penrith), A66, and A592 (Ambleside); and
South West Bound Motor Vehicles: via A592 (Rheged), A66 (Kemplay Bank Roundabout), A6 (Kendal), Wildman Street, Stramongate, New Road, Blackhall Road, Sandes Avenue, A5284 (Plumgarths Roundabout), A591 (Ambleside), Wansfell Road, Rothay Road, Compston Road, Rydal Road, Smithy Brow, Kirkstone Road and the unrestricted section of the C5001.
A way for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times for the restrictions detailed in (i) to (iv), inclusive above.
Prohibit any vehicle from waiting at any time, on any day and/or from loading and unloading, at any time, on any day (including blue badge holders) along that section of the A591 (both sides), Grasmere, from its junction with the B5287, Stock Lane, extending in a northerly direction, a distance of approx. 375m (Ref: TTROW/18003).
Duration for 2 above: Sunday 10 May 2026 between 1030 and 1830 hours.

The Order will come into operation on 10 May 2026 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of three days from that date. However, please note that it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required for 1 day on Sunday 10 May 2026, as detailed above, and only as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
