THE M1, M45 AND M6 MOTORWAYS
(M1 JUNCTION 16 TO M1 JUNCTION 19)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND
PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 9346363) has made an Order on the M1, M45 and M6 Motorways, in the Counties of North Northamptonshire, West Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire, to enable emergency refuge area remedial works to be carried out.
The effect of the Order will be to –
(1) impose a 50 miles per hour speed restriction on –
(a) the southbound carriageway of the M1 from a point 125 metres northwest of the centreline of the M6 underbridge, near Catthorpe, to a point 100 metres northwest of the slip road leading to Watford Gap Services;
(b) the southbound carriageway of the M6 from a point 100 metres west of the centreline of Newton Lane overbridge, near Newton, to its junction with the link road leading to the southbound carriageway of the M1 at Junction 19, including that link road;
(c) the eastbound carriageway of the M45 from a point 800 metres east of the centre line of the A5 overbridge, to the tip of the nosing at its junction with the southbound carriageway of the M1 ;
(d) the northbound carriageway of the M1 from a point 300 metres north of the Three Bridges Road underbridge, to a point 200 metres southeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the westbound carriageway of the M45;
(e) any slip road leading to or from the M1 at Junction 18 ;
(f) any slip road leading to or from the M1, to or from Watford Gap Motorway Services Area; and
(2) close any emergency refuge area adjacent to –
(a) the northbound carriageway of the M1 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 16, to its junction with the link road leading from the A14 (M1 Junction 19); and
(b) the southbound carriageway of the M1 from its junction with the link road leading to the A14 (M1 Junction 19), to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 16. The work is expected to start at 22:00 on Monday 11th May 2026 and continue for approximately three months. The Order will come into force on 4 May 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 months.
Vehicles being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction and closures. Vehicles being used for special forces purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction, and vehicles being used for traffic officer purposes or in connection with the works will be exempt from the closures.
