TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026
Sunderland City Council gives notice that on 27th April 2026 it made an Order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended), and with the consent of the Secretary of State under 16B of that Act, in order to facilitate the holding of a relevant event, namely the Herrington Country Park Radio 1 Big Weekend 2026 (‘The Event’) which is to take place from 22nd May 2026 until 24th May 2026, and to enable the participants to take part in and the public to spectate the Event. The effect of the Order will be to (i) introduce residents permits and prohibit all vehicular traffic along the lengths of roads listed in Schedule 1 unless displaying a valid residents permit for the Event, (ii) and prohibit all vehicles from waiting and loading or unloading at any time along, the lengths of roads specified in Schedule 1 and (iii) introduce a 24 hour urban clearway along the lengths of roads listed in Schedule 2. The Order shall come into force at 00.01am on 22nd May 2026 and cease at 06.00am on 25th May 2026. During the Event, diversions will be signposted via the adjacent highway network where applicable. The prohibitions shall apply at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. There will be exemptions in the Order for police, fire and rescue services and ambulance vehicles on emergency call and vehicles being used in connection with the Event.

SCHEDULE 2 - 24 HOUR URBAN CLEARWAY TO BE INTRODUCED ON THE FOLLOWING ROADS FOR THE EXTENTS STATED: B1286 (Herrington Road) – between A690, Board Inn junction to A182; Chester Road – full extent; Avondale Avenue – full extent; Wensleydale Avenue – from Avondale Avenue to its western extent.
