What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1)(a)
THE M5 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 29 TO 31), A30 AND A38 TRUNK ROADS
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) has made an Order on the M5 Motorway in the County of Devon so barrier replacement and associated works can be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to take place overnight (19.00 to 06.00) on or after 29 April 2026 and be completed by 1 May 2027.
The effect of the Order will be to (a) authorise the overnight (19:00 to 06:00) closure of:
(i) the M5 Motorway northbound and southbound between junctions 29 and 31;
(ii) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at M5 junction 29;
(iii) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at M5 junction 30;
(iv) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at M5 junction 31;
(b) authorise the weekend closure (20.00 Friday to 06.00 Monday) of:
(i) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at M5 junction 29
(ii) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at M5 junction 30;
(iii) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at M5 junction 31;
(c) impose a mandatory 24hr 50 mph speed limit on:
(i) the M5 southbound from Junction 29 to Junction 30;
(ii) the M5 northbound from Junction 30 to Junction 29;
(iii) the M5 southbound from 800 metres north of Old Matford Lane overbridge to the end of the M5;
(iv) the M5 southbound from 800 metres north to 200 metres south of Old Matford Lane overbridge;
(v) the M5 northbound from the southern end of the M5 to Junction 31;
(vi) the M5 northbound 1700 metres south of Old Ryden Lane overbridge to Junction 30;
(vii) the A30 westbound from M5 junction 31 to 650 metres east of the entry slip from the A38;
(viii) the A38 eastbound from 1000 metres west of Days Pottles Lane overbridge to the southern end of the M5;
(ix) the northbound and southbound entry and northbound exit slip roads at M5 Junction 30;
(x) the southbound entry slip road at M5 Junction 29;
(xi) the southbound exit slip road at M5 Junction 31. During the closures traffic will be diverted via junctions of the M5 and local roads.
The speed limit (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles) closures and diversions will be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works and will only apply when traffic management measures are in place The Order will come into force on 27 April 2026 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months.
