The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following length of road. A 477 metre length of B6444 Heighington Lane, Newton Aycliffe from the roundabout with Long Tens Way/Spring Road at the eastern side of the closure, in a westerly direction to the roundabout leading to Aycliffe Business Park to enable gas main replacement works to be undertaken. Throughout the period of the closure, a diversion will be available to vehicular traffic from the eastern side of the closure, northerly via Spring Road and Whinbank Road, left onto Horndale Avenue, then south westerly along School Aycliffe Lane to the A6072 Roundabout junction with B6444, to the western side of the closure and vice versa. A diversion route for HGV’s will be available from the eastern side of the closure from B6444 Heighington Lane south easterly on B6444 St Andrews Way to A167 then southerly to A1(M) Junction 59 (Aycliffe) Interchange, then westerly on A1(M) to Burtree Interchange (J58) then northerly along A68 and A6072 to the roundabout junction with B6444 leading to the western side of the closure, and vice versa. The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are to commence from 8am on Wednesday 29/4/2026 and are anticipated to be completed in 7 weeks. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
