NOTICE OF PROPOSED RAISED TOUCAN CROSSING
READING ROAD & TEMPLE PARK ROAD, SOUTH SHIELDS 2026

NOTICE is given that the Council of the Borough of South Tyneside after consultation with the Chief Officer of Police proposes under Section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and sections 90A and 90C of the Highways Act 1980 and the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999 to install a new raised TOUCAN crossing in the place described in schedule 1 below.

NEW RAISED TOUCAN CROSSING

TEMPLE PARK ROAD,
SOUTH SHIELDS
The centre of the crossing is to be located 27m east of the junction with Reading Road

Associated zig-zag markings on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times will be marked either side of the crossing extending up to 17.3m WESTWARDS and 21.3m EASTWARDS. The raised crossing plateaux will consist of a raised surface above the existing carriageway for the full width of the road located 22m east of its junction with Reading Road for 8.4m in an easterly direction with ramps measuring 2m in length. The raised crossing is necessary to ensure safety of pedestrians
at this point and to reduce traffic speeds. Details of these proposals may be inspected from Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm at the
Town Hall, Westoe Road, South Shields NE33 2RL. Alternatively you can request a copy of the documentation by emailing

express support or make any other observations about these proposals, you must make them in writing to the Council’s Legal Services Department at the address below or by using the same email address above by the 1 April 2026. Any objections must specify the grounds on which they are made.
