York, Multiple Temporary Closures Due To Various Works
What is happening?
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
Notice is hereby given that City of York Council (the Council), in exercise of powers under Sections 14(1) & 15(8) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (the Act), made an order on Thursday, 05 March 2026 in respect of the locations numbered (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6) & (7). Furthermore, the Council, not less than 7 days from the publication of this Notice, intends to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Act in respect of the locations numbered (8), (9), (10), (11) & (12).
(1) KITCHENER STREET, YORK
This Order prohibits vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Kitchener Street, York between its junction with Huntington Road and the projected western boundary of property no. 4 (closed road) during the period when water mains works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0900hrs on Monday, 09 March 2026 and ending at 1500hrs on Monday, 09 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. It is envisaged that the works will only take 2 hours. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will not be signed during the works period. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
(2) A59 RED LION TO SHIRBUTT LANE, A59 YORK ROAD & SHIRBUTT LANE, HESSAY
This Order restricts vehicles to a 40 miles per hour (mph) speed limit in those lengths of road on A59 Red Lion to Shirbutt Lane, A59 York Road & Shirbutt Lane, Hessay (i) on the A59 Red Lion to Shirbutt Lane between its junction with Shirbutt Lane and a location 900 metres south-east of said junction and (ii) on A59 York Road between its junction with Shirbutt Lane and the projected western boundary of property named ‘Shirbutts’ and (iii) on Shirbutt Lane between its junction with A59 York Road and a location 100 metres south-west of said junction (restricted roads) during the period when telecoms works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0915hrs on Monday, 09 March 2026 and ending at 1600hrs on Tuesday, 10 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely.
(3) MICKLEGATE, YORK
This Order prohibits vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Micklegate, York between the junctions with Priory Street and Bar Lane (closed road) during the period when sewer works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0001hrs on Monday, 09 March 2026 and ending at 2359hrs on Monday, 23 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. It is envisaged that access will be maintained for cyclists and pedestrians throughout the works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Nunnery Lane, Bishopgate Street, Skeldergate Bridge, Tower Street, Clifford Street, Nessgate, Low Ousegate, Bridge Street.
(4) PEASHOLME GREEN, YORK
This Order prohibits vehicles from performing a left hand turn from that length of road on Peasholme Green, York into Jewbury (restricted road) during the period when traffic signal upgrade works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0800hrs on Tuesday, 10 March 2026 and ending at 2359hrs on Friday, 27 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. It is envisaged that this restriction will only be in place for five consecutive days out of the whole works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Layerthorpe, Eboracum Way, Heworth Green, Foss Bank.
(5) HAXBY ROAD, YORK
This Order prohibits vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Haxby Road, York between its roundabout controlled junction with Hayleys Terrace and a location 144 metres south of said junction (closed road) during the period when gas mains works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 2000hrs on Wednesday, 11 March 2026 and ending at 0600hrs on Friday, 13 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. It is envisaged that the road will only be closed between 2000hrs and 0600hrs each day of the works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Clarence Street, Lord Mayors Walk, Monkgate, Huntington Road, Hayleys Terrace.
(6) LONG RIDGE LANE, POPPLETON
This Order prohibits vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Long Ridge Lane, Poppleton between its junction with Long Ridge Drive and the projected north-eastern boundary of property no. 137 (closed road) during the period when electricity mains works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0001hrs on Thursday, 12 March 2026 and ending at 2359hrs on Sunday, 15 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Millfield Lane, Main Street.
(7) SCARCROFT ROAD (CONTINUATION), YORK
This Order continues in force The York (Scarcroft Road) (Temporary Traffic Restriction) Order 2026 (original Order). The effect of which is to continue the prohibition on vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Scarcroft Road, York between its junctions with The Mount and Scarcroft Hill (closed road) during the period commencing at 1801 hours on Sunday, 22 March 2026 and ending at 1800hrs on Tuesday, 07 April 2026 (works period) or at a date when water mains works being undertaken thereon have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. Access for residents and emergency services will be maintained during the works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via The Mount, Blossom Street, Nunnery Lane, Bishopthorpe Road.
(8) BURLINGTON AVENUE, YORK
This Order will prohibit vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Burlington Avenue, York between its junctions with Melrosegate and Hewley Avenue (closed road) during the period when highway maintenance works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0800hrs on Monday, 16 March 2026 and ending at 1600hrs on Tuesday, 17 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. It is envisaged that the road will only be closed between 0800hrs and 1600hrs each day of the works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Melrosegate, Constantine Avenue.
(9) WHELDRAKE LANE, WHELDRAKE
This Order will prohibit vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Wheldrake Lane, Wheldrake between its junctions with Crockey Hill Road and a location 171 metres west of the projected western boundary of the property called Woodridge (closed road) during the period when telecoms works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0930hrs on Monday, 16 March 2026 and ending at 1530hrs on Thursday, 19 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. It is envisaged that the road will only be closed between 0930hrs and 1530hrs each day of the works period. Access for residents and emergency services will be maintained. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Crockey Hill Road, A19 Deighton To Crockey Hill, A19 York Road, Skipwith Road.
(10) BACK LANE FROM 1 TO 37 WHITE CROSS ROAD, YORK
This Order will prohibit vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Back Lane From 1 To 37 White Cross Road, York between the junction with White Cross Road and a location 43 metres north of said junction (closed road) during the period when telecoms works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0800hrs on Monday, 16 March 2026 and ending at 1800hrs on Friday, 20 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will not be signed during the works period.
(11) DALE STREET, YORK
This Order will prohibit vehicles from proceeding, parking and waiting in that length of road on Dale Street, York between the projected south-western boundaries of property no’s 56 and 66 (closed road) during the period when water supply works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0800hrs on Monday, 16 March 2026 and ending at 2000hrs on Friday, 20 March 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. It is envisaged that access for residents and emergency services will be maintained during the works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will not be signed during the works period.
(12) ELDON TERRACE & AMBER STREET, YORK
This Order will prohibit vehicles from proceeding and waiting in that length of road on Eldon Terrace & Amber Street, York (i) on Eldon Terrace between the projected north-eastern boundaries of property no’s 11 and 29 and (ii) on Amber Street between its junction with Eldon Terrace and the projected south-eastern boundary of property No. 3 (closed road) during the period when gas mains works are being undertaken thereon, commencing at 0800hrs on Monday, 16 March 2026 and ending at 1700hrs on Friday, 10 April 2026 (works period) or at a time when the works have been completed whichever is the earlier. This is to ensure that the said works can be carried out safely. Additionally, all on-street parking on the north-western side of Eldon Terrace will be suspended for the works period only. It is envisaged that the road will only be closed between 0800hrs and 1700hrs each day of the works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Neville Street, Haxby Road, Clarence Street, Lord Mayors Walk, Monkgate, Huntington Road, Park Grove, Emerald Street, Earle Street.
The above temporary Orders will not prohibit works or emergency access nor will they prohibit access to premises provided that access is not prevented by on-going works or safety concerns. Traffic signs/barriers will indicate the extent of the prohibitions/restrictions.
