What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14

THE A1(M) MOTORWAY 

(JUNCTION 51 TO JUNCTION 50)

(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1(M) Motorway, in the County of North Yorkshire, to enable resurfacing works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Sunday  22 March 2026 for 1 month, or until completed.

The effect of the Order will be, between 8pm and 6 am, at times during the works, to :

(i)   close the A1(M) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 51 to the entry slip road at Junction 50, a distance of 17500 metres;

(ii)  close the A1(M) southbound entry slip road at Junction 51;

(iii) close the A1(M) southbound exit slip road at Junction 50 ;

It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day to:

(iv) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1(M) southbound carriageway from 1600 metres north of the exit slip road at junction 51 to 200 metres south of the  entry slip road at junction 50, a distance of 19200 metres; and

(v)  impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1(M) southbound exit slip road at junction 51 and the entry slip road at  junction 50.

During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.

Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 21 March 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
