What is happening?
THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF DURHAM
(SUREACE DRESSING PROGRAMME 2026-VARIOUS ROADS, COUNTY DURHAM) (TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES AND SPEED RESTRICTIONS) ORDER 2026
The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit and restrict all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road to enable surface dressing works and any preparatory remedial works to be undertaken.
Temporary Road Closures: Location With Diversion C21 Eastgate to Rookhope; C44 Whorlton to A67 Gate House; Unc 40.2 between B6278 and B6282, Foggerthwaite, Egglesburn; Unc Pontop Pike Lane and Delight Bank; C18A from College Wy jun Esh to Russell Street and Hamilton Row, Waterhouses; B6313 Front Street Newfield to Front Street Fell & Burnthouse Bank; Unc 27.10 and Unc 20.16 from Cassop Moor Roundabout to Quarrington Hill; Unc 33.1 Roddymoor Road Harperley.
Location Without Diversion Unc 21.2 Murton to Haverley House.
40 mph (where applicable) & 10 mph Speed Restrictions with convoy system and No Overtaking: Location A689 from Front Street Ireshopeburn to Hood Street St Johns Chapel; A68 Dene House to Drover Road, Castleside; B6296 Browney Bank, Satley; A67 from C44 Gate House to Winston; B1283 West Sherburn to Sherburn; B1280 Front Street West, Wingate to Station Road/Front Street, Station Town; B1280 Salters Lane, Blue House to Haswell; A182 Front Street, South Hetton; A183 Chester Road Burnmoor to Houghton Gate; A167 Rushyford to Ricknall Lane Newton Aycliffe; A181 Pony Roundabout to Wingate; A688 Thinford Lane to Tursdale; B6352 Findon Hill, Sacriston to New College including Unc 19.12 Pothouse Lane.
20 mph Speed Restriction during bedding-in period (signed accordingly): All locations.
Relevant speed restrictions, road closures and alternative routes will be clearly signed to vehicular traffic, where appropriate/available. The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are to commence on 1/3/2026 and are anticipated to be completed in 8 months. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
