STEVENAGE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Public Notice - Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 Proposed Changes To Taxi Ranks

NOTICE is hereby given that the Stevenage Borough Council, in exercise of its powers under Sections 63 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976, proposes to remove/vary the taxi ranks located in the High Street, Stevenage as noted below: Revocation / Variation - Two Part Time Ranks (Each comprising of approx. 6 Bays) High Street, Stevenage (Northbound & Southbound).

The proposed changes are necessary to enable the introduction of two new zebra crossings in more appropriate locations outside the Red Lion and The Mulberry Tree, replacing the existing crossing outside Austin's, and to deliver holistic improvements along the High Street. The taxi rank will be retained on the northbound side of the High Street and extended in length from 35 metres to 54 metres, while the southbound taxi rank will be removed. The reduction in taxi rank provision from 70 metres to 54 metres, is required to maintain sufficient clearance from the Drapers Way junction and to support safer traffic movements. The operating hours of the remaining rank will be extended by two and a half hours, operating from 18:30 to 04:00 (previously 21:00 to 04:00). During daytime hours, the rank will be available for general parking, with new signage installed to clearly communicate the revised arrangements.

A copy of this notice will be available for inspection at the Council Offices during public opening hours. A plan of the works to be carried out are available at: Plan - Traffic Regulation Order - High Street Taxi Rank Revocation and Variation. Any person wishing to comment or make objections regarding this proposal should do so in writing to: licensing@stevenage.gov.uk. Alternatively, correspondence can be sent to: The Licensing Manager, Stevenage Borough Council, Daneshill House, Danestrete, Stevenage, SG1 1HN, no later than 23rd February 2026.

Dated: 26th January 2026.
