ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT
1984 – SECTION 14
THE A1 TRUNK ROAD
(WHITTINGHAM JUNCTION TO DENWICK INTERCHANGE)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited has made an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the County of Northumberland, to enable resurfacing and road marking to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 8pm on Friday 30 January 2026 for 2 months, or until completed.
The effect of the order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to impose a temporary 40mph on the A1 northbound carriageway from 190 metres south of Whittingham Junction to 275 metres north of the entry slip road at Denwick Interchange.
It will be necessary, for 24 hours a day, to close the laybys adjacent to the A1 Trunk Road:
(i) northbound carriageway approximately 1000 metres north of Widdington;
(ii) northbound carriageway approximately 715 metres south of the exit slip road at Alnwick;
(iii) northbound carriageway approximately 775 metres north of the entry slip road at Alnwick;
(iv) southbound carriageway approximately 1160 metres south of the exit slip road at Alnwick;
(v) northbound carriageway approximately 400 metres south of Lane Head Junction; which will be used as an abnormal load holding area; and
(vi) southbound carriageway approximately 2500 metres south of the B6341.
It will also be necessary between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:
(i) ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A1 at its junction with West Cawledge/Alnwick Lodge;
(ii) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road southbound carriageway from the exit slip road to 1360 metres north of Denwick Interchange, a distance of 1360 metres;
(iii) impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road northbound carriageway from 1300 metres north of Whittingham Junction to 275 metres north of the entry slip road at Denwick Interchange, a distance of 5500 metres;
(iv) impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road southbound carriageway from the exit slip road to a point 185 metres north of Denwick Interchange, a distance of 185 metres; The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle.
Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 29 January 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
