The Highway & Commercial Road, Temporary Traffic Prohibition Due To Resurfacing Works

What is happening?

TRANSPORT FOR LONDON

Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 - The A1203 and A13 GLA Roads (The Highway and Commercial Road) (London Borough of Tower Hamlets) (Temporary Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2026

1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable resurfacing works to take place at A1203 The Highway.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle:

(1) except buses, from entering, exiting, proceeding and stopping on The Highway between its junction with King David Lane and Glamis Road;

(2) from entering, exiting, proceeding and stopping in a westerly direction on the Highway between its junction with Butchers Row and the ingress/egress to No.340 The Highway, Free Trade Wharf;

(3) from entering or exiting the northern arm of Glamis road between its junction with The Highway and the ingress/egress to the carpark of Gordon House;

(4) from turning left from Commercial Road into Bucher Row. Local access will be maintained.

The Order will be effective at certain times from Between 13th January 2026 and 12th June 2026 each night, 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM (ceasing at 5:00 AM on 13th June 2026) or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibition is in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs via: (for westbound traffic) Butcher Row, Commercial Road, Whitechapel High Street, Leman Street and Dock Street to normal route of travel; (for eastbound traffic) Dock Street, Prescot Street, Mansell Street, Whitechapel High Street, Commercial Road and Butcher Row to normal route of travel; (for banned turn) Whitechapel High Street, Leman Street and Dock Street to normal route of travel.
