What is happening?

(A417 HARWELL TO MOULSFORD) (SPEED LIMITS) ORDER 20**

(ASTON TIRROLD AND ASTON UPTHORPE PARISHES) (SPEED LIMITS) ORDER 20**
NOTICE is given that Oxfordshire County Council proposes to make the above orders under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers. The effect of the orders – which are proposed as part of the Council’s ‘Vision Zero’ (road safety) strategy – is to introduce lower speed limits on various sections of the A417 (and some adjoining roads) as follows:
A. Between Lechlade & Faringdon:

30mph speed limit – in place of the existing 40mph speed limit:
a. A417 (at Buscot) – between a point 40 metres north of its junction with Snowswick Lane, and a point 175 east of its junction with the unnamed road leading to Buscot Lock.

40mph speed limit – in place of the existing 60mph National speed limits:
a. A417 (at Buscot) – between a point 175 east of its junction with the unnamed road leading to Buscot Lock, and a point 60 metres west of its junction with the access to Buscot Park at ‘West Lodge’;

50mph speed limits – in place of the existing 60mph National speed limits:
a. A417 (at Buscot) – between a point 359 metres south of its junction with Kelmscott Road, and a point 40 metres north of its junction with Snowswick Lane,
b. A417 (at Buscot Park) – between a point 60 metres west of its junction with the access to Buscot Park at ‘West Lodge’, and a point 110 metres west of its junction with the access to Buscot Park at ‘Basque House,’
c. A417 (at Buscot Park) – between a point 360 metres east of its junction with the access to Buscot Park at Basque House, and the existing 30mph speed limit at Faringdon.
B. Between Faringdon & Wantage:

40mph speed limit – in place of the existing 50mph speed limit:
a. A417 (at Challow) – between a point 125 metres north of its junction with the access to the ‘Field View’ accommodation, and a point 75 metres southeast of its junction with New Road.
C. At Aston Tirrold:

40mph speed limits – in place of the existing 50mph speed limits:
a. A417 (at Blewbury Hill) – between a point 395 metres west of Spring Lane, and a point 175 metres southeast of its junction with the access to the ‘Ridgeway Adventure Sports Centre’,
b. Chalk Hill – between the existing village 20mph speed limit, and its junction with the A417,
c. Spring Lane – between the existing village 20mph speed limit, and its junction with the A417.
The Oxfordshire County Council (A417 Lechlade) (40mph Speed Limit) Order 2006, the Oxfordshire County Council (A417 Faringdon to Wantage, Vale of White Horse District) (50mph Speed Limit) Order 2007, the Oxfordshire County Council (A417 Buscot and Eaton Hastings) (40 Miles Per Hour Speed Limit) Order 2024, the Oxfordshire County Council (Buscot Parish) (Speed Limits) Order 2025, the Oxfordshire County Council (Aston Tirrold and Aston Upthorpe Parishes) (Speed Limits) Order 2024, and the Oxfordshire County Council (A417 Harwell – Reading Road) (50 Miles Per Hour Speed Limit) Order 2011 will be revoked/replaced as necessary.

Objections to the proposals and other representations specifying the grounds on which they are made may be sent in writing to the address below by the end of 23 January 2026. The Council will consider objections and representations received in response to this Notice. They may be disseminated widely for these purposes and made available to the public.
