ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 –
SECTION 14
(THE A1 TRUNK ROAD LOW ESPLEY TO THIRSTON)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the County of Northumberland, to enable road drainage remediation and sign replacement works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Monday  12 January 2026 for 8 months, or until completed. The effect of the order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to:

(i)   impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road carriageway from 1700 metres north of the northbound exit slip road at the A697 to 3800 metres south of the B6345 overbridge, a distance of 7650 metres;

(ii)  close the layby adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway approximately 2890 metres north of the northbound exit slip road at the A697;

(iii) close the layby adjacent to the A1 southbound carriageway approximately  2630 metres north of the southbound entry slip road at the A697;

(iv) close the layby adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway approximately  768 metres north of the northbound entry slip road at Stannington Interchange; and

(v)  close the layby adjacent to the A1 southbound carriageway approximately 581 metres south of Felton Lane Head Junction, which will be used as an abnormal load holding area.

It will also be necessary, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works to:

(i)   impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road carriageway from  2670 metres north of the northbound exit  slip road at the A697 to 4770 metres south  of the B6345 overbridge, a distance of  5700 metres. The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle.

(ii)  ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A1 southbound carriageway at Jacksons layby entrance, Tritlington;

(iii) ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A1 northbound carriageway at Causey Park layby entrance;

(iv) close the bus stop area adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway 75 metres north of the C129 Tritlington Junction; and

(v)  close the bus stop area adjacent to the A1 southbound carriageway 150 metres north  of Tritlington Junction.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). Access will be maintained at all times to premises and properties which are accessible from, and only from, the A1. The Order comes into force on 11 January 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
