A27 TRUNK ROAD

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways has made an Order on the A27 Trunk Road in the Counties of Hampshire, West Sussex and East

Sussex, and the Unitary Authorities of the City of Brighton & Hove and the

City of Portsmouth, under Sections 14(1)(a) and 14(1)(c) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road.

The effect of the Order is to:-

1.   authorise the overnight closure (in phases) of –

(a)  both carriageways of the A27 between Portsbridge Roundabout

(A3) and Pevensey Roundabout (A259);

(b)  both carriageways of the A27 between London Road Roundabout

(A23) and the northern roundabout at Patcham Interchange;

(c)  any roundabout within the description of the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) and (b) above;

(d)  the entire length of the gyratory system at Broad Marsh Interchange;

(e)  the slip and link roads leading to and from the carriageways described in 1. (a) above;

(f)  any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) and (b) above;

(g)  any bus stop or lay-by adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above; and

(h)  any gap between the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) and (b) above, and any dedicated lane used for the purpose of turning through them.

2.   to impose, in sections as required, an overnight ban on overtaking on both carriageways of the A27 where it is currently permitted on single carriageway sections within the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above.

These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and A27 project works.

The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 2nd January 2026.

The overnight closures will be in operation between 20:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).

Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures. The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2026 and remain in force until 24th December 2026.

During the closures, traffic affected will be diverted using other junctions of the A27, or by using the A22, A29, A26, A259, A264, A270, A280, A281, A283, A284, A285, A293, A2026, A2270, A2280, B2192, and local roads as appropriate. The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force, and the diversion routes listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions. The weight restriction on the A259 though Peacehaven will be suspended by permission when it is part of the diversion route.

Access to and from premises accessible from, and only from, the lengths of carriageway to be closed will be permitted under escort.

The temporary closures, overtaking bans and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works periods.
