M60 Motorway, Junctions 23-24 - Temporary Restriction And Prohibition Of Traffic To General Maintenance Works

THE M60 MOTORWAY (JUNCTIONS 23-24 CARRIAGEWAYS & SLIP ROADS)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No.09346363) intends to make an Order on the M60 Motorway, in the Borough of Tameside, in the County of Greater Manchester, to enable resurfacing, drainage, barrier and other general maintenance works to be carried out in safety.
The Order will impose restrictions and prohibitions on the following sections of the M60 Motorway:
i. a 50 mph speed limit on the anticlockwise carriageway, from a point 215 metres south of the first point of the entry slip road at J24, to a point 560 metres northeast of the last point of the exit slip road at J23;
ii. a 50 mph speed limit on the anticlockwise entry slip road at J24;
iii. a 50 mph speed limit on the anticlockwise exit slip road at J23;
iv. a 50 mph speed limit on the clockwise carriageway, from a point 190 metres northeast of the first point of the entry slip road at J23 leading from the A635 Manchester Road to a point 605 metres north of the last point of the exit slip road at J24;
v. a 50 mph speed limit on the clockwise entry slip road J23 leading from the A6140;
vi. a 50 mph speed limit on the clockwise entry slip road at J23 leading from the A635 Manchester Road;
vii. ban all traffic from the anticlockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J24, to the first point of the entry slip road at J23;
viii. ban all traffic from the clockwise carriageway, from the last point of the exit slip road at J23, to the first point of the entry slip road at J24;
ix. ban all traffic from the anticlockwise entry slip road at J24;
x. ban all traffic from the anticlockwise exit slip road at J23:
xi. ban all traffic from the clockwise entry slip road at J23 leading from the A635 Manchester Road;
xii. ban all traffic from the clockwise entry slip road at J23 leading from the A6140;
xiii. ban all traffic from the clockwise exit slip road at J24;
xiv. allow the hard shoulder adjacent to the anticlockwise carriageway to be used as a running lane, from a point 645 metres north of the first point of the entry slip road at J24, to a point 90 metres southwest of the last point of the exit slip road at J23;
xv. allow the hard shoulder adjacent to the clockwise
carriageway to be used as a running lane, from a point 160 metres south of the first point of the entry slip road at J23 leading from the A6140, to a point 685 metres north of the last point of the exit slip road at J24. A 50 mph speed limit will be in force on the hard shoulders when used as running lanes, as indicated by traffic signs;
xvi. impose a width restriction of 2.00 metres (6 feet 6 inches) in lanes 3 or 4 of the offside lanes as indicated by traffic signs of the anticlockwise carriageway, from a point 645 metres north of the first point of the entry slip road at J24, to a point 455 metres northeast of the last point of the exit slip road at J23;
xvii. impose a width restriction of 2.00 metres (6 feet 6 inches) in lanes 3 or 4 of the offside lanes as indicated by traffic signs of the clockwise carriageway, from a point 160 metres south of the first point of the entry slip road at J23 leading from the A6140, to a point 685 metres north of the last point of the exit slip road at J24.
Restrictions i.-vi. and xiv.-xvii. are expected to be in place during a continuous period, subject to traffic signs, starting at 20:00 on Monday 12 January 2026 and ending at 06:00 on Saturday 27 June 2026. Prohibitions vii.-xiii. are expected to be in place overnight between 21:00 and 06:00 (07:00 on Saturday and Sunday mornings) during a period starting on Monday 12 January 2026 and ending on Saturday 27 June 2026.
However, works may start and continue during subsequent continuous periods or between the same times on subsequent nights, until completed.
Diversion routes via alternative junctions of the M60 Motorway, and local roads will be well signed.
The restrictions will not apply to emergency services or special-forces vehicles, and the prohibitions will not apply to emergency services, works vehicles or any vehicle being used for winter maintenance purposes.
The restrictions and prohibitions will only apply during such times and to such extent as shall, be indicated by traffic signs. The Order comes into force on 11 January 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months. For further information, contact sam.smith@nationalhighways.co.uk
