A34 TRUNK ROAD

(M3 JUNCTION 9 TO M40 JUNCTION 9) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways intends to make an Order on the A34 Trunk Road in the Counties of Hampshire and Oxfordshire, and the Unitary Authority of West Berkshire, under Sections 14(1)(a) and 14(1)(c) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road.

The effect of the Order would be to authorise the phased overnight closure of:–

  1. both carriageways of the A34 between the roundabout at M3 Junction 9 and the roundabout at M40 Junction 9 (in sections as required), and all of the slip and link roads leading to and from those carriageways;

  2. any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 1. above;

  3. any lay-by or bus stop adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. above;

  4. any gap in the central reservation, and their dedicated right-hand turn lanes, adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. above; and

  5. the roundabout at M40 Junction 9 (in sections as required).

These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal works of a cyclical nature and A34 project works.

The duration of each closure would vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion.

The programme of works would start on or after 2nd January 2026. The overnight closures would be in operation between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).

Planned maintenance work would be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures.

The Order would come into force on 2nd January 2026 and remain in force until 24th December 2026.

During closures above, traffic affected would be diverted via other junctions of the A34, or by using the A423, A4142, A40, M40, A418, A4074, A44, A415, B4017, A4183, A4130, A417, A338, A420, A4185, A4130, M4, A339, B4640, A343, A3093, A303, M3, A30 and A33 as appropriate. The diversion in operation would vary according to the closure in force, and the diversion roads listed are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions.

The closures and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works periods.
