What is happening?

HIGHWAYS ACT 1980 AND WILDLIFE AND COUNTRYSIDE ACT 1981

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (FOOTPATH NO 262029 PARISH OF WORKINGTON)

PUBLIC PATH DIVERSION AND DEFINITIVE MAP AND STATEMENT MODIFICATION ORDER 2025

On the 18 November 2025 Cumberland Council confirmed the above order made under Section 119 of the Highways Act 1980 and Section 53 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

The effect of the order as confirmed is to divert the whole width of that length of public footpath no 262029 situate at Oldside in the parish of Workington from Grid Reference 299607 529670 northwards for about 819 metres to Grid Reference 299686 530477; to run from Grid Reference 299577 529674 eastwards for about 48 metres to Grid Reference 299622 529684 then northwards for about 797 metres to Grid Reference 299686 530477. The width of the new section of path will vary from 3 to 6 metres.

A copy of the Order, as confirmed, and map may be inspected free of charge at Workington Library, Vulcans Lane, Workington CA14 2ND and the offices of the Countryside Access Team, The Parkhouse Building, Kingmoor Business Park, Carlisle CA6 4SJ by appointment only (ref 5.1.524). Details of the Order are available to view on the Council’s website and copies of the Order may be purchased at a cost of £2 per A4 sheet and £3 per A3 sheet. The order comes into force on 27 November 2025, but if a person aggrieved by the order wants to question its validity, or that of any provision contained in it, on the ground that it is not within the powers of the Highways Act 1980, as amended, or on the ground that any requirement of the Act, as amended, or of any regulation made under the Act has not been complied with in relation to the order, he or she may, under paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 to the Act as applied by paragraph 5 of Schedule 6 to the Act, within 6 weeks from 27 November 2025 make an application to the High Court.
