A20 TRUNK ROAD – NEAR SWANLEY TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A20 Trunk Road in the County of Kent, under Section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to prevent traffic incursion into works proposed to be executed on the section of the A20 under Transport for London jurisdiction west of the closure.

The effect of the Order would be to authorise:-

  1. the overnight closure of;

    a) the London-bound carriageway of the M20/A20 between M20 Junction 1 (M25 Junction 3) and the Transport for London boundary (approximately 565 metres east of the centreline of Cookham Road underbridge);

    b) the road leading to the London-bound carriageway of the A20 at M20 Junction 1 (M25 Junction 3/A20);

    c) the roads leading to and from Bournewood Quarry; and

    d) the road leading to the London-bound carriageway of the A20 at Maidstone Road Junction (B2173);

  2. the 24-hour closure of the lay-by adjacent to the London-bound carriageway between points 27 metres west and 603 metres west of St Georges Road overbridge.

These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors working on behalf of Transport for London undertake general periodic maintenance work.

It is expected that the work would occur approximately four times a year, timing and duration to be advised by Transport for London. The overnight closures would take between 22:00 and 05:00 hours (maximum period).

The Order would come into force on the 2nd January 2026 and remain so until 18th December 2026.

Traffic affected by the closures in 1) above would be diverted using the A223, B258, and B2173.

The temporary closures and diversion route would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
