Between Weeford and Huddlesford and Between Hilliard’s Cross and M1 Junction 28 Roundabout - Temporary Prohibition of Traffic

What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTIONS 4(1), 14(1)(a) AND (c), (4) AND (7) THE A38, A5148 AND A516 TRUNK ROADS AND CONNECTING ROADS (BETWEEN WEEFORD AND HUDDLESFORD AND BETWEEN HILLIARD’S CROSS AND M1 JUNCTION 28 ROUNDABOUT) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 09346363) intends to make an Order on the A38, A5148 and A516 Trunk Roads, in the Counties of Staffordshire and Derbyshire, to enable maintenance and improvement works, to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to take place overnight between 19:00 and 06:00 (07:00 on Saturday and Sunday mornings) during a period starting on Friday 2nd January 2026 and ending on Wednesday 23rd December 2026.

The effect of the Order will be to impose prohibitions on the following lengths of carriageway:

(1) the A38 northbound from its junction with the exit slip road leading to the roundabout junction with the A5 and the M6 Toll slip roads (Weeford Island), at Weeford, to its roundabout junction with the A5206 (Swinfen Roundabout, at Swinfen;

(2) the A38 southbound from its junction with Swinfen Roundabout to its junction with the entry slip road leading from Weeford Island;

(3) the A5148 northbound from its dumbbell roundabout junction with the A5 and A5127 Birmingham Road, near Shenstone, to its junction with the A38, at Swinfen;

(4) the A5148 southbound from its junction with the A38, at Swinfen, to its dumbbell roundabout junction with the A5 and A5127 Birmingham Road, near Shenstone;

(5) the A38 northbound from its junction with the A5148, at Swinfen, to its junction with the link road leading to Cappers Lane, near Huddlesford;

(6) the A38 southbound from its junction with the link road leading from Cappers Lane, at Huddlesford, to its junction with the A5148, at Swinfen;

(7) the A38 northbound from its junction with the link road leading from Wood End Lane, at Hilliard’s Cross, to its roundabout junction with the B6019 and the M1 Junction 28 slip roads (Pinxton Interchange), at Pinxton;

(8) the A38 southbound from its junction with Pinxton Interchange, to its junction with the link road leading to Wood End Lane, at Hilliard’s Cross;

(9) the A516 eastbound from a point 433 metres west of the centreline of The Hollow underbridge, at Mickleover, to its junction with the A38;

(10) the A516 eastbound from its junction with the A38, to its roundabout junction with Manor Park Way and the A5020, at Mickleover;

(11) the A516 westbound from its roundabout junction with Manor Park Way and the A5020, at Mickleover, to its junction with the A38;

(12) the A516 westbound from its junction with the A38, to a point 433 metres west of the centreline of The Hollow underbridge, at Mickleover;

(13) any slip road, link road or dedicated lane leading to or from the lengths of carriageway described in (1) to (12) above; and

(14) any lay-by, service road or bus stop area adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in (1) to (12) above.

During any road closures traffic will be diverted via alternative junctions of the A38, the A5148, the A516 and local roads. These diversions will be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the area.

The duration of each prohibition will vary depending upon the nature of the work being undertaken on each occasion.

The prohibitions will not apply to emergency services, works, or winter maintenance vehicles. The prohibitions will only apply during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs.

The Order comes into force on 27 December 2025 and will expire on 23 December 2026.
