Speed Limit Reduction – A134 Colchester Road, Assington
National Grid is upgrading the electricity transmission network between Bramford substation in Suffolk and Twinstead Tee in Essex through the construction of a new overhead line and underground cable.
The existing electricity network in East Anglia needs upgrading in order to transport all the new renewable and low carbon energy we expect to connect to the network in this area by the end of the decade. We are therefore reinforcing the network so we can meet future demand, boost energy security and help the nation become more self-sufficient.
Our plans, which were approved by the Government in September 2024, will involve constructing around 18 km of new overhead line and around 11 km of underground cable.
National Grid’s principal contractor, Balfour Beatty, has established the main project compound in Assington, CO10 5LX with the access point from the adopted highway provided off the A134.
To ensure safe access to and from the compound and to maintain road safety for local traffic, a temporary speed limit reduction will be implemented along a section of the A134 either side of the main construction compound.
Details of the speed limit reduction are as follows:
• Location: A134 Colchester Road (between B1068 Stoke Road and Marshalls Green)
• Change: Speed limit reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph
• Effective from: 10 November 2025
• Duration: In place for the duration of the project. It is anticipated that the temporary speed limit reduction will be in place through to 2029
We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of local residents and road users while these important safety measures are in place.
