Hendon Area - Closure of Various Roads and Footways

What is happening?

THE CITY OF SUNDERLAND (CLOSURE OF ROADS AND FOOTWAYS IN HENDON AREA SUNDERLAND) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2025

Sunderland City Council gives notice that it intends to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to temporarily prohibit all traffic along the roads and footways in the Schedule. The Order is required to enable the water installation works to take place in or near the roads and footways. The Order will come into operation on 24th November 2025. The maximum duration of the closure under the Order is 18 months, however it is estimated that all the closures will only be in operation for approximately 6 months. The closures will be undertaken in phases, with only two sections of road and footway being closed at any one time. All pedestrians will be prohibited from the footways (except personnel involved in the works) and all vehicles, cyclists and horses will be prohibited from the roads (except vehicles involved in the works), until the works are completed or at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. Access for affected residents will be maintained throughout. Alternative routes will be provided via the adjacent highway network. Schedule Canon Cockin Street, Canon Cockin Street East Back, Fuller Road, Saint Alban’s Street, Saint Leonard Street, Fuller Road North Back, Hyde Street, Ashby Street, Villette Road South Back, Saint Leonard Street East Back, Cairo Street, Fuller Road, Tel-El-Kiber, Cairo Street East Back, Hastings Street, Hastings Street East Back, Hastings Terrace, for their entire lengths.
