What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTIONS 14(1)(a) AND 14(7)
THE M5 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 22 TO 24)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) has made an Order on the M5 Motorway in Somerset to enable barrier replacement and associated maintenance to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to take place on or after 2 November 2025 and be completed by 20 December 2025.
The effect of the Order will be to:
(a) authorise the overnight (21.00 to 06.00) closure of:
(i) the M5 southbound between Junctions 23 and 24;
(ii) the M5 northbound between Junctions 24 and 22;
(iii) the northbound and southbound entry slip roads at M5 Junction 23;
(iv) the northbound entry slip road at M5 Junction 24;
(b) impose a mandatory 50 speed limit on:
(i) M5 southbound from 500 metres north of the southbound exit slip road at Junction 23 to 100 metres north of Bath Road Overbridge;
(ii) M5 northbound from 500 metres south of Bath Road Overbridge to 400 metres north of the northbound entry slip road at M5 Junction 23
(iii) the northbound and southbound entry slip roads at Junction 23;
(c) prohibit vehicles over 2.0 metres wide from using the middle lanes of the lengths of the M5 given at (b)(i) and (b)(ii) above.
During the closures traffic will be diverted via junctions of the M5 and local roads.
The temporary mandatory speed limits (which will not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles), closures, width restrictions, and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works period and will only apply when traffic management measures are in place.
The Order will come into force on 31 October 2025 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months.
