M1 Motorway J34, Whitehill Lane, Rotherham - Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order

What is happening?

NATIONAL HIGHWAYS

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14
THE M1 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 34)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the M1 Motorway, in the District of Sheffield, to enable refurbishment of bridge joints & associated works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start on Monday 10 November 2025 for 8.5 months, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be, between 8pm and 6am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights, and between 8pm and 10am on Saturday nights, at times during the works, to:
(i) impose a temporary 50 mph speed restriction on the M1 northbound
carriageway from 657 metres north of the B6066 Whitehill Lane underbridge to 200 metres south of the Droppingwell footbridge, a distance of 4430 metres;
(ii) impose a temporary 50 mph speed restriction on the M1 southbound carriageway from 319 metres north of Grange Lane underbridge to 573 metres south of Tinsley South underbridge, a distance of 4550 metres; and
(iii) close the M1 northbound and southbound carriageways from the exit slip road at Junction 34 to the entry slip road at Junction 34, a distance of approximately 2150 metres.
During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.
Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in
connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 9 November 2025 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
