Coast Road - reduce the speed limit to 30mph
What is happening?
SOUTH TYNESIDE COUNCIL (A183 COAST ROAD, SOUTH SHIELDS – REVOCATION
OF 40MPH) ORDER 2025
South Tyneside Council proposes to make an Order under Section 84 of and Schedule 9 to,
the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers. The effect of the Order
will be to reduce the speed limit to 30mph by revocation of 40mph speed limit on Coast Road,
A183 South Shields/Whitburn from a point 216m south of the south kerb of Kingsway, South
Shields in a southerly direction to a point 318m south of the south kerb of the access road to
Souter Point Car Park, Whitburn. A 40mph speed limit will remain on Coast Road – A183
Whitburn from a point 80m north of the access road to Marsden Quarry in a north-westerly
direction for 900m. Full details of these proposals are contained in the draft order which,
together with a plan showing the lengths of road affected and a statement of the Council’s
reasons for proposing to make the Order, may be inspected from Monday to Friday during
normal office hours at the Town Hall at the address below. Alternatively, you can request a

If you wish to
raise an objection, express support or make any other observations about these proposals,
you must make them in writing to the Council’s Legal Services Department at the address
below or by using the same email address above by the 6 November 2025. Any objections
must specify the grounds on which they are made.
