Carlisle, Temporary Speed Restrictions For Carlisle Southern Link Road Works

What is happening?

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (A689 NEWBY WEST TO DALSTON ROAD, CARLISLE) (TEMPORARY 30MPH AND 10 MPH SPEED RESTRICTIONS) ORDER 2025

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to enable works in relation to the Carlisle Southern Link Road to continue in a safe manner (“the Works”), Cumberland Council intends to make an Order the effect of which is to: -

  1. Prohibit any vehicle from proceeding at speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour along that section of the A689, from its junction with Newby West Roundabout, extending in a south easterly direction for approx. 990m to its junction with the Dalston Road Roundabout.

  2. Prohibit any vehicle from proceeding at speeds in excess of 10 miles per hour along that section of the A689 from its junction with Newby West Roundabout, extending in a south easterly direction for approx. 990m to its junction with the Dalston Road.

N.B. The 10 miles per hour speed restriction will operate where contractor’s operatives and plant are working on site. It will be operated on a convoy system with a lead vehicle controlling traffic speed to protect the workforce.

No speed limit imposed by this Order will apply to vehicles falling within regulation 3(4) of the Road Traffic Exemptions (Special Forces) (Variation and Amendment) Regulations 2011 when used in accordance with regulation 3(5) of those Regulations.

The Order will come into operation on 13 October 2025 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months. However, please note that it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required for 5 months and only as and when the relevant traffic signs are displayed.
