M6 & M54 Motorways (M54 Junction 1 to M6 Junction 10A) - Temporary Speed Limit & Closure

What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 –  SECTIONS 14(1)( a) and  (7)

THE M6 AND M54 MOTORWAYS (M54 JUNCTION 1 TO M6 JUNCTION 10A) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2025

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 9346363) intends to make an Order on the M54 Motorway and the M6 Motorway, in the County of Staffordshire, to enable resurfacing works to be carried out.

The effect of the Order will be to, at different times, –

(1)  impose a speed restriction of 50 miles per hour on –

(a)  the southbound carriageway of the M6 from a point 650 metres northwest of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the M54, at M6 Junction 10a, to the tip of the nosing at its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 10;

(b)  the eastbound carriageway of the M54 from a point 437 metres southeast of the centreline of the B4156 Hobnock Road overbridge, to its merge with the M6 at Junction 10a;

(2)  close –

(a)  the southbound carriageway of the M6 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 12, to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 10;

(b)  the eastbound carriageway of the M54 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 1, to its junction with the southbound carriageway of the M6 at Junction 10a;

(c)  the entry slip road leading to the southbound carriageway of the M6 at Junction 12;

(d)  the entry slip road leading to the southbound carriageway of the M6 at Junction 11;

(e)  the entry slip road leading to the eastbound carriageway of the M54 at Junction 1; and

(f)  the slip roads leading to and from the southbound carriageway of M6, to and from Hilton Park Motorway Service Area (south of Junction 11).

The work will be carried out in two phases and is expected to start on Monday 20 October 2025 and continue for two months. The main closures will be carried out overnight between 21:00 hours and 06:00 hours. The speed restrictions will be in operation 24 hours a day for the duration of the works The Order will come into force on 13 October 2025. Vehicles being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restrictions and closures. Special forces vehicles will be exempt from the speed restrictions and vehicles being used in connection with the works or for winter maintenance purposes will be exempt from the closures.

Traffic wanting to continue southbound on the M6 will be diverted via the A5, the A449, the A460, the A4150 and the A454. Traffic wanting to join the M6 via the eastbound carriageway of the M54 will be diverted via the A449, the A460, the A4150, the A41, the A463 and the A454 leading to M6 Junction 10. The diversion routes will be signed.
