What is happening?

Essex County Council

(A414 between Harlow & Chelmsford) (Temporary 50MPH/40MPH Speed Limit) Order 2025

Notice is hereby given that the Essex County Council intends, not less than seven days from the date of this notice, to make the above Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Effect of the order: To temporarily introduce a 50/40mph speed limit on following lengths of A414 between Harlow and Chelmsford (these roads are national speed limit and 50 MPH).

A414, Ongar, Bobbingworth, North Weald BassettFrom a point approximately 160 metres west of Aulkingford Gardens, Ongar, west for approximately 2.7 Miles to a point approximately 110 metres east of A414 Talbot Roundabout. All roundabouts are included in this restriction.40 MPH
Stony Lane, BobbingworthWith its junction with A414, to approximately 80 metres from the 50 MPH terminal sign Epping Road, Bobbingworth40 MPH
The Street, High OngarWith its junction with A414 to approximately 78 metres from the 50 MPH sign to A414, Chelmsford Road, High Ongar50 MPH

Margaretting Road• On the north side (A414 junction with Margaretting Road) we are using the existing gateway posts, which is located approximately 33 metres from the A414.
• On the south Margaretting side, we are also using an existing post and lamp column, which is located approximately 53 metres from the A414 junction.50 MPH
Hylands House access RoadFrom its junction with the A414 Greenbury Way, South for approximately 85 metres.50 MPH
The Essex County Council (Epping Road & Stony Lane, Ongar) (Speed Limit) Order 2007 is hereby temporarily suspended insofar as it relates to the 50MPH speed limit on the said length of road only. All other restrictions will remain in force.

‘The Borough of Chelmsford (A414 Writtle Bypass) (Derestriction of affected roads) Order 1988’ is hereby temporarily suspended insofar as it relates to the sections of the A414 as above. All other restrictions will remain in force.

The Essex County Council (A414 – Greenbury Way, Chelmsford, Greenbury Way/Margaretting Road Roundabout/Highwood Road Roundabout/Ongar Road West, Writtle, Ongar Road, Highwood) & (Bulimers Way, Writtle) (Temporary Introduction of a 40 MPH speed Restriction) Order 2025 is hereby temporarily revoked.

The temporary restrictions are scheduled to commence on 29 September 2025 for 18 months.

The Order will come into effect on 29 September 2025 for 18 months or until a permanent Order is made to amend the speed limit.
