Cockermouth, Temporary Road Closures & Parking Restrictions For Taste Cumbria Food Festival
What is happening?
CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (VARIOUS ROADS, COCKERMOUTH)
(TASTE CUMBRIA FOOD FESTIVAL EVENT)
(TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2025
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to facilitate the holding of the Taste Cumbria Food Festival in Cockermouth (“the Event”) Cumberland Council has made an Order under section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (the 1984 Act), the effect of which is to impose the following restrictions on the days and during the hours specified below:
To prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along the following lengths of road:
(a) Main Street, Cockermouth – between its junctions with Gallowbarrow and Station Street.
An alternative route for vehicles will be available as follows:-
Westbound – via Station Street, Station Road, Gallowbarrow and Sullart Street.
Eastbound – via Sullart Street, South Street and Station Street
(b) Market Place, Cockermouth - its entire length.
(c) Bridge Street, Cockermouth – its entire length.
There is no suitable alternative route for vehicles during the restrictions specified at (b) and (c) above. Vehicular access for residents will be maintained at the west end of Main Street under the direction of a Banksman by the authorised traffic management company.
(d) On the westbound lane of the B5292 Station Road, Cockermouth, from its junction with the U2375 South Street, extending in a southerly direction for a distance of approx. 28 metres.
(e) On the west side of the underpass located between U2286 Station Road and Fairfield car park, from its junction with the U2286 Station Road, extending in a northerly direction for a distance of approx. 40 metres.
(f) U2285 Market Place, Cockermouth – between its junctions with Market Street and Kirkgate.
Duration – From 1600 hours on Friday 26 September 2025 to 2100 hours on Sunday 28 September 2025.
A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained by use of the existing pedestrian crossing for the restrictions specified in 1(d) above.
To prohibit any vehicle from waiting at any time or from loading and unloading at any time, on any day (including blue badge holders) along the following lengths of road:
(a) On both sides and entire lengths of South Street and Station Street, Cockermouth;
(b) On both sides of the B5292 Main Street, Cockermouth:
(c) On both sides of the C2064 Main Street, Cockermouth from the junction of Station Street (north and south side) (EXCEPT FOR BUSES AND TAXIS).
(d) On the east and west side of Kirkgate, Cockermouth (various lengths):
(e) On both sides of St Helen’s Street, Cockermouth (various lengths):
(f) On the north side of Lorton Street, Cockermouth (single 24m length)
Duration – From 1200 hours (midday) on Friday 26 September 2025 to 2100 hours on Sunday 28 September 2025.
(g) No vehicle shall proceed, other than in a south easterly direction, along South Street, Cockermouth, between its junction with Station Street and the B5292 Station Street.
Duration – From 1600 hours on Friday 26 September 2025 to 2100 hours on Sunday 28 September 2025. To facilitate access and to ensure two-way traffic flow during the road restrictions detailed in 1 above, the one-way traffic restriction on the section of the B5292 Station Street, from its junction with Main Street to its junction with South Street, will be suspended for the duration of the Event.
N.B. During the Event, access to Fairfield Car Park should be made from Station Road and exit via South Street.
The Order will not apply to vehicles which are:
(i) being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance services in the performance of their duties; and
(ii) being used by statutory undertakers for the execution of their duties; and
(iii) being used in connection with the Event; or at the direction of a police constable in uniform; and
(iv) displaying a valid permit or badge and are for pedestrians to any premises situated on or adjacent to the affected lengths of road, or to vehicles accessing the same, and only from the roads; and
(v) being used for local bus services and taxis.
The restrictions shall not apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.
The restrictions in 2 above shall not apply to vehicles when making deliveries to business premises providing that the deliveries are made before 10.00am and after 16.00pm when the relevant road is accessible.
The restrictions in 1(a) and 2(g) above will also be suspended for local scheduled bus services to allow access into Main Street and use of the temporary bus stop which will be located near the pedestrian crossing.
The temporary bus stops on Main Street and Station Street will be in place during the Event. The “No Waiting At Any Time” restriction and the No Loading At Any Time restriction currently in force at the bus stops available on Sullart Street and Station Street will be suspended to allow temporary bus stops. Temporary bus stops will be available on Sullart Street and Station Street and buses will be able to stop at times indicated on the timetable.
A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times during the restrictions detailed at 1 above.

The Order will come into operation on 26 September 2025 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of 3 days. It is anticipated that the restrictions will be required as detailed above and only as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
